 In Appreciation of Sydney Elworthy

A search of people associated with Grovehill revealed the name Elworthy which is written on World War 1 War memorial at St John's Church.

 

The son of Frederick Elworthy and his wife Harriet of Grove Hill.

 

Elworthy, Second Lieutenant Sydney Richard ("Dick"), Royal Air Force, of Grove Hill. Enlisted as a flying cadet in May 1917. Died of wounds following a plane crash near Winchester on 1 September 1918. He was about to proceed overseas on active service when the accident happened near his base at Worthy Down. Age 26. Son of Harriet and the late Frederick. Following his education at Berkhamsted School, he worked at a tea plantation in Ceylon.

 

He is buried in Hemel Hempstead Cemetery, Woodwells.
